Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Im sure most of you know that a new movie recently came out called "Forgetting Sarah Marshall." It was written and produced by the same people that did movies such as "Superbad" and "Knocked Up" I don't know about you but those are two of my favorite movies. I would encourage all of you to go see the movie as soon as you can. This post I guess goes towards the guys. If you were in his shoes, your girlfriend is leaving you for another man how would you react. I don't want to give the movie away so Ill wait to hear back from those who have seen it. I have a friend whose girlfriends left him for someone else. He found out she had been cheating on him on top of it all. Needless to say he was very upset. Right when he was starting to get over her she came running back. Girls please feel free to explain the speech of how you were dumb and did not realize what you had. I say its all lies but he bought right into it. So my question is this would you have taken her back after all of that or done what had happened in Sarah Marshall. This post is pretty lame, but I dont know what to do about my friend. Shes obviously not right for him.

Teachers Postponing

Why is it that the last few days of school always seem to have more work than the entire semester. This was true in highschool and seems to be true in college. Every class I have has a test or paper due this week only consisting of three days. Thats ridiculous in my opinion. I dont know how everyone else feels, but would like to. I am always curious if teachers time things wrong and end up having to squeeze things in or if its planned. I doubt its planned because they are only squeezing more work in for themselves. The problem however, whatever the reason may be is that it forces us to do sub par work. Instead of having ample time for each test or paper, we have to split amongst five big things. There is no way to have good time management for 4 test and one paper in three days. Im not trying to complain but simply understand why it always seems to happen, year after year. Are you guys as overwhelmed as I am? Do you guys feel that there is more work than can be handled in these three short days? I would love to know. With finals approaching we should be able to focus on that not last minute test we have to cram for. The worst part is this last minute test will somehow find its way right back to the final. I'm not sure where I'm geting bringing this up, I guess I figured I could vent on here. Please let me know if I'm alone or not.

Problems with Forming Sentences

This is not the first time I have heard of this issue. My dad is CEO of Fox Sports Grill and constantly tells me how he has to correct what his employees bring him. He hires them for an impressive resume but does not get the skills to go with it. Basic writing skills have been lost now that there are computers to do the work for you. Spelling has turned to spell check and grammatical issues are pointed out consistantly. This is not a bad thing until people solely rely on this. Some of the examples in the article were ridiculous. Those people should not have a job especially one where they have to write. I feel that all of the rhetoric classes I have gone through have been strenuous and difficult. However when I ask my parents what they did they say it was nothing like mine. So maybe thats the problem. Maybe these issues brought up in this article are referring to an older generation who maybe did not do as much rhetoric in school. Colleges are the hardest they have been to get in so maybe this competitiveness will provide a better education. I'm not saying the previous generation is inept of a good education just proposing a possible reason. Short concise sentences are all that is needed. There is no need to throw in big words just to sound educated. Your work will prove your education not using big words when they are not needed. As college students we forget this because we have been so brainwashed into thinking that big words mean a big grade. We must remind ourselves that this is not the case so that we do not face similar problems as in this article. Rhetoric is important, even if you are a business major.

Is college a crucial part of success?

When it comes to this topic im pretty torn. I have and always will believe that college is a crucial part of your success in life. Not even for the degree anymore but the open doors and connections you get with the degree. I feel that the knowlege you learnis important but more so the key to get you into that door you otherwise would not be able too. However my brother opted out of college and this is where i become torn. Sure I have heard all the stories of the millionares who never went to school and just created some amazing thing, but thats pretty rare. My brother means the world to me and I obviously want him to find success and be happy. So this is the problem. Do I stick with my previous beliefs shutting my brother out from success or do I re-think and hope that it is reachable without college? I have to re-think it. I feel that the passion he has for getting to what he ultimately wants to do is enough to get through. For his sake lets just hope it is.

Tattoos

I was going to write a comment on someone elses blog who wrote on this but i felt like elaborating on mine instead. I agree having 2 tattoos does not always get you good looks with the adults. I don't know about you but from your blog it seems like you are happy with your tattoos and if thats the case thats all that should matter. Tattoos are something you do for you or maybe to honor someone else but never to please other people. Atleast in my opinion. My tattoos mean the world to me and remind me of my friends, family, and my faith. The one on my back is a cross and a verse I got with my bestfriend. Not only is it a bond with him but the verse reminds me of who I aspire to be. On my left arm is an ambigram of the words Loyalty and Betrayal. It also is a theme of one of my favorite verses constantly reminding me to be loyal to my faith and God. So yeah society is changing and yeah we are different from the adults generation but that does not deserve ridicule or bad looks. So for everyone who thinks they are trashy I would challenge you to keep an open mind towards them until you atleast know what they represent. Howeever I will admit many people out there have trashy trashy tattoos and have unfortunately giving tattoos a bad name. So please keep an open mind but if not just remember your bad looks don't bother us but actually remind us why we got them in the first place, to be unique and proud of what you stand for.

Movie Challenge

Many people may assume by the title of my post that Im testing your movie knowledge. This is not the case. My challenge is this. Go see a movie and during the previews try your hardest not to become a movie critic. I can't do it. I don't know about you but I really enjoy seeing a movie for the previews. Previews are taking more and more time and I have never heard one complaint. My question is this; is there anyone out there who does not comment or think in their head a review of the preview they just saw? I know for me that when I see the previews I become a movie critic and instantly judge if I will want to see that particular movie. Most people have probably never thought of this idea but it came to me as I saw a movie 2 nights ago. Movies are an escape especially when you get to become something your not, like a movie critic. Its not the most exciting post but im more curious than anything to see if Im alone or if in fact others do the same as me. Are movies all about the movie or are the previews a big part too?

Argument

Claim: Don't settle for a career you are not passionate about when there are plenty of things you are passioante about in the world.

Reason: You will have more success if you are passionate about it.

Evidence: Studies show that people do better when they have passion for that thing.

Reason: You will feel that you are working twice as hard if you are not passionate about it.

Evidence: the old saying time flies when your having fun is true. If you enjoy what you are doing it will not seem like work.

Reason: You will be overall more happy if added stress from work is not present.

Evidence: No actual evidence yet I just know this to be true for myself

Love on TV

I realize I am writing a lot about TV but being home for break gave me a lot of time to watch. I'm sure someone has written on the following topic but I would like to write regardless. It seems like every other station you flip to their is some sort of reality TV show. I'm not going to sit here and say they are bad because I enjoy most of them. I am going to sit here and say they are not fooling anyone. Besides most of them being scripted, nobody believes these people are actually finding love. What are the odds that the network happened to pick the girl or guy you are supposed to spend the rest of your life with? I'm not good at math but they can't be good. I have never been on one of these shows but my best friends older brother has. After he was on it he explained that this so called reality TV show was more scripted than regular TV shows. The best example I can think of is The Bachelor. One guy and twenty five girls or so that the network picked for him to fall in love with. Call me old fashioned but I have a hard time believing one of those girls is the one he would have naturally fallen in love with. Maybe it's possible. The funniest thing to me is how at they end they are always torn between two girls they are in love with, but two months after the show they brake up. I dont want to be a downer on new forms of love just skeptical I guess. Like dating services, I dont have experience with them or know anyone who does so my opinion is strictly opinion. They might work great and I hope they do because so many people are looking for someone, I would just hate for people to be fooled into doing something that won't last. Maybe all of these things have to do with our high divorce rates or maybe its just the age we live in. I hope its possible and that I'm completely wrong for those peoples sake, I just had to state my opinion.

TV or the Bed?

Our society is clearly centered around the television to the point to where people plan their days around shows. This is not a particular problem until it consumes all that you do. I titled it TV or the Bed because I'm willing to bet that if someone could only afford one or the other some would go with the TV. This problem never really arises due to the fact that if you can afford a bed you can most likely afford a TV. This is more figurative than literal however it would be interesting to see. For example, I was home for a few days over spring break and saw some of this. Since I have been in college I have not had the time or the interest in watching much TV. In high school I had a strict schedule of shows I adhered too. Anyways back to home. I was out to dinner with my parents on Thursday night when all of the sudden I noticed they began to rush to get the bill to pay. At first I didn't think anything of it until I realized they had a show to catch. This is no where close to the extreme i used earlier but is still funny to see. TIVO is a perfect example of how much people need their shows. Twenty years ago TIVO would not have been near as succesful due to so much less television watching. TIVO is so succesful today that everyone of my friends has one inclding myself. People need there shows and TIVO gives them an excuse to obssess even more knowing there is no reason to miss. I am not criticizing anyone who watches a lot of TV rather just stating an observation i made over break. TV is prevalent and taking over its up to everyone who watches to decide if its a problem.

Does Narcissism Cause Laziness

I feel that one of the major causes of Narcissism is being given things without earning them. For example, if you are given everything you want growing up you will begin developing narcissism. This idea of getting what you want will change your mind set to believing you deserve everything you want. This is when it becomes a problem. We go to a very affluent school where we are all given a lot of things. Im not saying im not spoiled im just simply saying the things I have worked for others have just been given. This mentality carries people all through college until they have graduated and are on thier own. By this point, they are no longer being given things and are having to work for them. Many do not know how it is to work and others just don't care. This is where laziness is paralleled with narcissism. People are so spoiled their whole lives that when it comes time for them to earn something they are unwilling to do so. My dad owns a large restaurant chain across the country and says his biggest problem is finding young people willing to work. This is scary to think about what will happen to the business world of our generation. This lazziness also carries over into school, atleast I've seen this at SMU. When your given everything you want, how can you be expected to go out day by day and earn grades. So many people, including myself fall into the trap of thinking grades should be given to us. Its hard to except a bad grade, especially if you have not experienced failure or rejection before. Narcissism turns people into robots going through the motions unwilling to go out and work for anything. I also feel that this is the reason cheating has become so prevalent. Kids are not willing to do the work themsleves so the next best thing is to use someone elses. This is a serious problem because once these kids get into the real world, they will not be able to cheat their way through it. All in all narcissism is slowly but surely leading to the destruction of our generation and society.

What The Drinking Age Should Be

We live in a country that greatly differs from all the others for many reasons. One being our laws and in particular the drinking age. Laws are made for a reason obviously but sometimes these so called reasons dont seem to make a lot of sense. For example, why is it that when you are 18 years old you are eligible to go to war, but not drink a beer? Why is it that at 18 you can elect the leaders of your country who make the laws, but can't go to a bar? These questions are on the minds of many and will remain unanswered until the law is changed. Its a proven fact that once a person turns 21 many of those people significantly drink less than before. Most teenagers whether in highschool or college find drinking alluring because it is illegal and risky. They feel empowered through this rebellion. So taking that into consideration, I feel that more 18 year olds who drink heavily would slow down once it was legal. Im not saying it should be 18 because I want everyone in college to get drunk im just saying in a reverse way it might help with our nations problem. More and more people are drinking and there does not seem to be a decline anytime soon. All in all if you can give your life for your country you should be able to raise a beer for it too.

Blogging...Good or Bad?

As this is my first blog, i would have to say I am clearly no expert on blogging. I do not know much about this other than its a way to anonymously share your thoughts on any topic that interest you. I feel that blogging could fit into the good or bad category. It fits into the good because it is important for people to have a place to share their opinions and receive some sort of feed back as well. Many people are not comfortable talking about many things and need an alias to hide behind. I personally do not understand this and feel that you should stand proud by your opinions and not be afraid to take credit for them. This is where blogging slips into the bad category. I feel that people should share their thoughts and opinions without being afraid of negative feedback. You only truly learn when you are taken out of your comfort zone and blogging provides that comfort zone. I look forward to learning more about this whole idea of blogging but as for now I do not think its a worth while thing.
